Soutzoukakia (Σουτζουκάκια)

Tzoutzoukakia (Small)

An old favourite, easy to prepare, with many variations.  The basic recipe below.


800 gr minced beef

4 fat cloves crushed garlic

1 tsp ground cumin

1/2 glass wine, red or white

1/2 cup bread crumbs or frigania (rusk)

1 beaten egg

2 cups grated ripe tomatoes

Stick of cinnamon

1/2 tsp allspice

Sprinkle of sugar

Olive oil and flour for frying

S & P

These ingredients will give up to 15 soutzoukakia, ie 4/5 portions.


Mix together in a bowl the minced meat, garlic, cumin, bread crumbs, wine, egg, S & P.  Work the mixture well with your hands to get a good mix.  Form into rolls approx. the length of your middle finger.

Tzoutzoukakia (1) (Small)

Roll in flour and fry in medium to hot oil, browning on all sides.  Place onto absorbent kitchen roll when cooked.

Add a splash of olive oil to a saucepan, add the grated tomato, cinnamon stick, allspice, sugar, S & P and cook for approx. 10 minutes.  Add the meat balls and cook together for a further ten minutes and it`s ready.  Serve with rice, macaroni or over the top of chips!


You can use a dollop of butter instead of the olive oil for a richer sauce. You can add to the sauce, oregano, olives or green peppers.
